Flower Longevity Tips

The saddest part of getting a beautiful flower arrangement is when it starts to fade. I wish that flowers lasted forever, but at the same time, the temporariness is part of their beauty. To make them last a little bit longer, follow these 5 tips.

  • Change the water daily

If you don’t do anything else, this is probably the most important one. Remove your flowers from their vase, dump the old water and then refresh with new clean water. If you have a foam arrangement, where the flowers are inserted into foam, just keep the foam nice and wet.

  • Add Soda or Aspirin to the water

Aspirin helps maintain proper pH levels within the water. Simply crush up one aspirin and add to the water each time you change it. Alternatively, the sugar in soda helps flowers last longer and even smell a bit more fragrant. Just add 1 part of citrus soda (like sprite, 7-up etc.) every 3 parts water each time you refresh.

  • Keep Leaves out of the water

Leaves in your water can create bacteria. Keep your water clean by removing any leaves and petals that may have fallen into the vase.

  • Display your bouquet in a cool place out of direct sunlight

Where you put your flowers is another important factor in how long your flowers will last. There’s a reason we florists keep our flowers refrigerated. Keeping flowers cold and out of direct sunlight will definitely extend their life and keep them looking fresh for longer.

  • Remove dying flowers

Dying flowers give off gases that cause the other healthy flowers to wilt faster.  So remove any that you see that have already begun to wilt and it will keep the rest alive longer.

There you have it. With a little bit of TLC, your flowers can stay looking a lot better for a lot longer.
